On May 16, the Faculty of Law of Caucasus International University organized a public lecture on the topic: “The Idea of Secularism in Georgia - Theological Context”.
The meeting was chaired by Archpriest Longinoz Suarishvili, Head of the Department of Canonical Law of Tbilisi Theological Academy.
“The Church, from the day of its foundation, in its nature and essence, in the implementation of its mission and principles of governance, has always been independent from the state. The church has never claimed to gain worldly political power or to dominate the state - this is strange to the nature of the church.
The idea of secularization, this is not an idea of the 21st century, or the 20th century - the church was founded on this idea in this universe and was by its very nature was secular from a state.
At the lecture, we talked about the precedent when the church may, to some extent, assume the functions of the state administration, and we noted that this is more harmful than good for the church. In order to establish a healthy relationship between the church and the state, based on democratic ideas, it is necessary for the state to officially recognize church law, of course, with certain wordings, and for the state to be certain about these basic church doctrines, and all this should serve the good of the country and society” –noted Archpriest Longinoz Suarishvili.
The public lecture was attended by the administration of the Faculty of Law and students of various faculties.
