The National Jury Mock Trial Championship is being held in 12 universities of Georgia in order to raise awareness about the jury trial and deepen the procedural skills of students with the cooperation of the Georgian Bar Association, the United States Embassy, the Prosecutor’s Office of Georgia and the Supreme Court.
The project includes intra-university trainings and mock trials for teams, as well as semi-final and final competitions.
For the project, each university will present two defense and prosecution teams, as well as a jury composed of 12 students from other faculties.
On December 3, students of the Faculty of Law of Caucasus International University were trained for the prosecution side under the guidance of Tornike Nadiradze, the representative of the Prosecutor’s Office of Georgia, and for the defense side under the mentorship of Sulkhan Komakhidze, the representative of the Bar Association.
A mock trial was held with the participation of the jury in Academician Mindia Ugrekhelidze Mock Trial Hall on December 10. It was attended by George Khatidze, Dean of the Faculty of Law of Caucasus International University, Giorgi Chekhani, Executive Director of the Georgian Bar Association and Nino Aglemashvili, Head of the Unit for Ensuring Effective Support of the State Prosecution on Jury Trial Cases of the General Prosecutor’s Office of Georgia.
It should be noted that the teams participating in the competition are trained by qualified facilitators for simulated trials. Based on their assessment, the four best teams (two from the regions and two from Tbilisi) will move to the final stage. The final stage will be held in the Supreme Court of Georgia, which will be evaluated by a jury composed of acting judges, prosecutors and lawyers. The finalists will be prepared by the trainers of the Bar Association and the Prosecutor’s Office of Georgia for the final mock trial.
The National Jury Mock Trial Championship is being held in Georgia for the first time in a pilot format, and it is planned to hold the championship every year in the future.
