On May 15, the Faculty of Social Sciences of Caucasus International University organized a round table on the topic: “The Role of Diplomacy in International Relations”.
Diplomat, researcher, Associate Professor of Harvard University, former envoy of Georgia to Great Britain, Kakhi Kenkadze led the lecture.
At the meeting with the students, the speaker talked about his career experience, discussed the specifics of working in the diplomatic service and the skills necessary for a successful diplomat, and in the second part of the meeting, he answered the audience’s questions.
“The main role of diplomacy in international politics is mediation. A diplomat is a negotiator who connects two parties, states or certain structures to exchange messages.
A diplomat is a peacemaker by nature. Whatever the parties want to do by force, it is the diplomat’s role to do it peacefully and reach an agreement that both parties will be content with. If diplomacy succeeds, then diplomacy works, and there are many examples of this, even the Caribbean (Cuba) crisis.
A good command of foreign languages, history and geography, as well as geopolitics and geostrategy is a necessary condition for success in the field. Diplomacy can be a person of any profession, however it is preferable to study in the direction of international relations.
As for the main principle of a diplomat’s activity, it is law-obedience and acting within the established framework, which is defined for a diplomat by law,” stated Kakhi Kenkadze.
The public lecture was moderated by Alika Guchua, head of CIU Undergraduate Program in International Relations. The guest and the audience were also welcomed by the Deputy Dean of CIU Faculty of Social Sciences, Ekaterine Chalaganidze, and the head of CIU Postgraduate Program in International Relations and International Security, Vakhtang Maisaia.
