The Worldwide Symposium on Geographical Indications was held in Georgia on June 14-16. The event was organized by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) and the National Intellectual Property Center of Georgia “Sakpatent”.
Guests from 62 countries will be introduced to unique Georgian products from different regions, and Georgia will host the World Forum of Geographical Indications for the first time.
The symposium was opened by the Vice Prime Minister, Minister of Economy and Sustainable Development, Levan Davitashvili, after which the participants were addressed by the Minister of Environment Protection and Agriculture, Otar Shamugia.
It is worth noting that among the participants of the symposium is Caucasus International University winery “Ethno Okami”, which was presented by the Dean of CIU Faculty of Viticulture and Winemaking, Olani Gotsiridze, the General Manager of “Ethno Okami”, Lasha Bodaveli, and the Chief Winemaker of the company, Saba Kitiashvili.
Please note that the geographical indication status indicates the distinctive characteristics and high quality of a specific product and provides information to the consumer about the place of their production.
The participants of this year’s forum discuss the impact of the promotion of geographical indications on the tourism sector, what innovations are introduced in the field, how to protect unique products and what marketing strategy is acceptable.
Sakpatent has registered 64 products with geographical indications in Georgia, which will be tasted by the participants of the symposium.
